Asahi Town: Torchlit Night Sakura – So Stunning, This Video Barely Captures It! | Funakawa "Spring Quartet" 2024
At the 2024 'Asahi Funakawa Spring Quartet' held in Asahi Town, we were able to witness the stunning beauty of cherry blossoms at night, illuminated by bonfires. However, during video recording, I found it challenging to capture their beauty as effectively as I wished, making me realize the difficulty of the shoot. Nevertheless, the enchanting beauty of the night cherry blossoms I saw with my own eyes, and the exceptional charm of the 'Spring Quartet' event, were truly special. Along with the challenges in videography, I will share this unique night cherry blossom experience.
Overview of Asahi Funakawa's 'Spring Quartet'
The Asahi Funakawa 'Spring Quartet' is a signature spring event in Asahi Town, where visitors can enjoy a breathtaking view created by four elements: cherry blossoms, rapeseed blossoms, tulips, and the snow-capped Mt. Asahi in the background. Approximately 280 cherry trees line the Funakawa riverbank, beneath which vibrant fields of rapeseed blossoms and tulips spread out. The best time to visit is from mid to late April, when many tourists come to witness this beautiful spring scenery. For the 2024 event, in addition to the beautiful daytime landscape, a special evening event featured bonfires illuminating the night cherry blossoms, creating a mystical atmosphere distinct from the daytime.
Enchanting Illumination of Night Cherry Blossoms and Bonfires
For the 2024 Spring Quartet, bonfires were specially set up for night cherry blossom viewing. The flames of bonfires, placed at several locations, illuminated the cherry blossom petals with a warm orange glow, creating an utterly mystical ambiance completely different from daytime. The sight of the flickering flames harmonizing with the pale pink of the cherry blossoms was beautiful, as if one had wandered into an elegant world of ancient times. The smoke from the bonfires drifting on the night breeze also added to the charm, allowing all five senses to enjoy the spring evening. However, photography in the dark was technically very challenging, and accurately capturing the light of the flames and the subtle hues of the cherry blossoms proved difficult with typical cameras or smartphones.
Technical Challenges and Lessons Learned from Videography
Filming the night cherry blossoms illuminated by bonfires presented more technical difficulties than imagined. First, camera settings were crucial for shooting in a dark environment, but the significant contrast between the bright flames and the dark cherry blossoms made it challenging to achieve proper exposure. Furthermore, the bonfire flames constantly flickered, resulting in unstable lighting, and the cherry blossoms' colors changed moment by moment. Handheld shooting easily led to camera shake, and even with a tripod, the swaying of cherry branches due to wind made shooting difficult. Consequently, I couldn't fully record the beauty seen with the naked eye in video, but through this experience, I learned about the depth of night photography and the importance of appropriate equipment and techniques.
Although the night cherry blossom videography at the Asahi Funakawa 'Spring Quartet' 2024 did not yield technically satisfying results, the beauty I experienced firsthand left a deep impression on my heart. The enchanting splendor of the night cherry blossoms illuminated by bonfires was something special that cannot be fully conveyed through videos or photos. While the challenge of improving photography skills remains, having such a precious experience on a spring night became an irreplaceable memory.
